How to Stop a Washing Machine from Shaking and Walking (5 Fixes in Order)

A washing machine that shakes the floor, bangs the wall, or literally walks out of its alcove during spin cycle is fixable in an afternoon — usually without a repair tech. Work through these fixes in order; most machines are cured by step 2 or 3.

1. Check the Load and the Legs First (Free)

An unbalanced load (one heavy blanket) causes violent shaking on any washer — redistribute and rerun before blaming the machine. Then check leveling: put a bubble level on top, and adjust the machine's threaded leveling legs until it's level front-to-back and side-to-side. Push down on each corner — any rocking means one leg isn't carrying weight. Lock the leg jam nuts when done.

2. Remove Shipping Bolts (New Machines)

If a newly installed washer shakes violently, check the back panel: manufacturers ship front-loaders with transit bolts that lock the drum. Running with them installed causes extreme vibration and will damage the machine. Remove all of them.

3. Add Anti-Vibration Pads Under the Feet

This is the biggest improvement per dollar. The washer's hard metal or plastic feet transmit every vibration straight into the floor — which is why upstairs laundry rooms shake the whole house. A dense solid rubber anti-vibration pad under each foot absorbs that energy before it reaches the floor, stops the machine from walking, and protects flooring from dents.

What to buy: solid neoprene rubber pads, not soft foam. Foam "anti-vibration pads" compress flat within months under a 150–200 lb machine and stop working. 4. Stiffen or Isolate the Floor (Persistent Cases)

On bouncy wood-framed floors, vibration is amplified by the floor itself. A 3/4" plywood platform under the machine spreads the load across more joists; pads still go between the machine feet and the platform. For side-by-side washer/dryer pairs on pedestals, pad both machines — a shaking dryer feeds the washer and vice versa.

5. When It's Actually Broken

If shaking appeared suddenly on a previously smooth machine with a balanced load, suspect worn shock absorbers/suspension rods (front-loaders) or suspension springs (top-loaders). Pads help but won't cure failed suspension — that's a parts repair.
