EPDM vs Neoprene: Which Rubber for Outdoor Use?

EPDM and neoprene are the two rubbers people compare for outdoor jobs, and the decision is simpler than the spec sheets make it look: direct sun for years → EPDM; wear-and-tear plus weather → neoprene. Here's the reasoning.

Where EPDM Wins

EPDM's superpower is near-total immunity to UV, ozone, and oxidation — the three forces that crack rubber left in the sun. That's why it's the standard for roofing membranes, car door seals, and marine trim. If the part will bake on a rooftop, a vehicle exterior, or a boat deck for years, EPDM outlasts neoprene meaningfully. It also shrugs off detergents, acids, and hot water better (250°F continuous vs neoprene's 200°F).

Where Neoprene Wins

Neoprene is the tougher rubber: better abrasion, cut, and tear resistance, and moderate oil tolerance where EPDM has essentially none — petroleum products swell and destroy EPDM quickly. For parts that get stepped on, dragged, vibrated, or splashed with the occasional oil — equipment feet, anti-vibration pads, washers under fasteners, dock bumpers — neoprene's durability matters more than EPDM's sun immunity.

The Decision Table

Application Winner
Vehicle/boat edge trim in constant sun EPDM — see EPDM edge trim
Outdoor equipment feet & pads Neoprene — bumper pads, feet
Washers on deck/roof fasteners Neoprene — neoprene washers (sealing + durability)
Seals in hot water or detergents EPDM
Anywhere near oil, fuel, grease Neither — use Buna-N (nitrile)

Both Handle Cold the Same

Both stay serviceable to about -40°F, so winter isn't the tiebreaker — sun and abrasion are. Full seven-exposure comparison including Buna-N and silicone: rubber compatibility chart, temperature resistance chart, or take the 3-question material quiz.
