Every laptop eventually loses a foot. The chassis rocks when you type, the fans work harder because the intake vents sit flat against the desk, and the bare bottom panel scratches everything. Manufacturers rarely sell the feet separately — but the universal fix takes five minutes and works on any brand: HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, and MacBooks.
Step 1: Figure Out What You're Replacing
Flip the laptop over and look at what's left:
- Round dot feet (most common) — measure the diameter and height of a surviving foot, or the recessed circle where one sat. Typical: 3/8"–1/2" (10–13mm) diameter, 1/8"–1/4" (3–6mm) tall.
- Bar/strip feet (gaming laptops, HP Spectre/Envy) — you can replace a strip with two or three square feet spaced along the old channel. It looks intentional and grips better.
- All feet gone — do a clean four-corner re-foot with matching round feet. Even height matters more than matching the factory look.
Step 2: Pick the Right Replacement
Self-adhesive rubber bumper feet are the answer for laptops — never screws (you'll hit the battery or board) and never glue-on hard plastic (it slides). Choose:
- Height: equal to or slightly taller than stock. Taller = better airflow = cooler CPU. 1/4" is a noticeable cooling upgrade on gaming laptops.
- Color: black for dark chassis, clear for silver/white, gray for aluminum.
- Shape: round for dots, square for strip channels.

Step 3: Install So They Never Fall Off
- Power off. Flip the laptop onto a towel.
- Peel away failed feet; rub off old adhesive with isopropyl alcohol (90%+ works best).
- The step everyone skips: clean each mounting spot with alcohol and let it dry fully. Adhesive fails on oily or dusty aluminum — clean metal holds for years.
- Peel, position, press each foot firmly for 30 seconds.
- Leave the laptop upside down for a few hours; full adhesive cure takes 24 hours.
