The fastest answer: measure your panel hole — that measurement is the groove diameter of the grommet you need. A 1/2" drilled hole takes a 1/2" groove diameter grommet. That single rule answers most sizing questions. Two more dimensions fine-tune the fit:
The 3 Measurements That Matter
1. Groove diameter = your hole size. Measure across the hole in the panel. This is the dimension collections are organized by — we stock every groove size from 1/4" to 4-3/16".
2. Groove width = your panel thickness. The groove is the slot that grips the panel edge. Thin sheet metal (1/16") needs a narrow groove; plywood or thick fiberglass needs a wide one. A groove that's too wide lets the grommet wobble; too narrow and it won't seat.
3. Inside diameter = what passes through. The wire bundle, hose, or cable needs to fit the grommet's center opening with a little room. If nothing passes through and you just want to close the hole, use a blank/closed grommet instead.

Common Sizing Mistakes
Measuring the grommet's outer flange instead of the hole (the flange is always bigger than the hole); ordering by inside diameter alone (two grommets with the same ID can fit completely different holes); and ignoring panel thickness (the most common reason a correctly-sized grommet still falls out). When between sizes, size the groove diameter to the hole exactly — rubber flexes on the other dimensions, but the groove-to-hole fit is what holds it in.
