Grommet sizing questions

How do I measure for a rubber grommet?

Measure three things: the diameter of the hole in your panel (this is the grommet's groove diameter, listed as "fits hole"), the thickness of the panel (the grommet's groove width must be at least this), and the wire, cable or hose that passes through (it must be smaller than the grommet's inside diameter, ID). Do not size by the outside diameter; the OD is always larger than the hole.

What size grommet fits a 1/2 inch hole?

Any grommet listed as "fits 1/2 inch hole". We stock several, including 3/8 inch ID grommets with 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8 inch grooves, so pick the groove that matches your panel thickness. The size finder lists every match.

What is the groove width on a rubber grommet?

The groove width is the channel that snaps onto the edge of the hole. It should be equal to or slightly more than your panel thickness: about 1/16 inch for thin sheet metal, 1/8 inch for heavier steel or plastic, and 1/4 inch or more for thick plastic or wood panels. A groove much wider than the panel lets the grommet sit loose.

Can I enter my hole size in millimetres?

Yes. Type the size with "mm" (for example 22mm) in the size finder and it converts to inches and shows the closest grommets we stock.

Do you sell rubber grommets in bulk?

Where these parts are used

Rubber grommets line holes in sheet metal, plastic and wood panels so wires, cables and hoses pass through without chafing: control cabinets, electrical boxes, vehicle firewalls, appliances, machinery guards and marine consoles. The 3-3/16" bumper is used on cargo and enclosed trailer ramp doors, equipment and furniture; the 1-1/2" and 3/4" feet go under speaker cabinets, electronics and equipment.
