Chair Leg Caps & Stool Leg Tips

Metal chairs, bar stools, step stools and folding tables usually stand on bare tube ends or thin plastic glides that crack, fall off and leave the steel to scratch the floor. A rubber leg cap slides over the end of the tube, grips the floor so the chair stays where you put it, and quiets the scrape when it is pulled in and out. This page brings together our slip-on tips for round legs from 3/8" to 1-1/4" and a thick-wall square cap for 1" square tube.

How to size a leg cap. Measure the outside of the leg, not the old glide: across the tube with calipers for round legs, or across one flat face for square legs. Pick the cap whose inside diameter equals that number. It should need a firm push or a tap with a rubber mallet; a cap that slides on loosely will walk off. Check every leg, because chairs from the same set are not always identical, and replace caps as a set so the chair sits level. On hardwood or tile, wipe the floor under each leg before fitting so grit does not get trapped under the new rubber.
